Systems Engineering Department Capstone Conference 2005 Brochure
USMA Capstone Conference

The Department of Systems Engineering, United States Military Academy will host a Capstone Presentation Conference, 4 May 2005.  The conference historically has featured students from West Point, George Mason University, the University of Arkansas, the Air Force Academy, and other outstanding undergraduate programs presenting their capstone work to an audience made up of fellow students, judges, clients, and professors. 

For Cadets in the Department of Systems Engineering, these presentations served as a culmination point for their cadet academic careers and allowed them to present their findings to their instructor, possibly their client, a general audience, and judges.  Each Presentation Track was assigned judges who voted for the best project of each track.  These winners received awards at the Capstone Banquet the evening of 4 May.

Department of Systems Engineering Capstone Program

The United States Military Academy's Systems Engineering and Engineering Management Capstone Program provides a senior design experience integrating and focusing the entire undergraduate program. It Combines elements of systems engineering and engineering management theory and practice allowing the students to conduct design and experimental work for clients along the lines of actual practicing systems engineers.

Incorporated into the design experience are:

  • Use of open-ended USMA, Army and DoD problems
  • Encouragement/development of student creativity and innovation 
  • Use of a systems design methodology 
  • Synthesis and analysis of alternative solutions 
  • System modeling and simulation 
  • Use of decision methodologies 
  • Consideration of feasibility, reliability and maintainability
  • Inclusion of historical, political, economic, social, ethical, and environmental impacts
